Yesterday, I dug up what felt like several square kilmetres of paving bricks, and carried them by hand up a slope of about 15 metres to the garage we were paving. Today, my thighs and shoulders are remonstrating with me. "Fool!" they mutter at me. "Think you can lift bricks all day, and then have a comfortable Sunday? That's not how it works around here."

The garage is now paved, which is another giant step towards our eventual goal of vastly improving the house. Today, we're fussing around with cement and sand trying to finish it off. I've decided that I hate cement, and when West's father arrived to help out, I retreated inside to spend some quality time with the computer, something that's been rather lacking lately.

Remember all my whining about constant housework several months ago? It seems that we actually have the house under control, after several days of hard work concentrating on one room at a time. It's been like this for some weeks now, and we've managed to maintain this state of organisation, which is practically a miracle considering our general tendency towards chaos.

The kitchen takes about half an hour to restore to pristine condition on the weekend. The spare room is now a useable little space which I've designated my reading, meditation and music room. Two people can now sit in comfort in the study. The living room is no longer the place where general clutter gets stored. It's amazing the difference it makes to one's mood, arriving home to an organised space.

Speaking of space, I took a little indoor plant to work last week to sit on my desk. It looks lovely, glowing in its little blue glazed pot, and so many people have commented on it that I've decided I want to get another one, to have on the floor near my desk. My cubicle feels different with something alive in it. I'm imagining a reasonably sized fern or palm for the floor, and am hoping to get the use of the car this afternoon so I can go browsing at the local nursery.
