2005-09-17 - 5:34 p.m. I picked up my violin from the luthier this week. It ended up costing $440, and I was pretty dubious when I went to pick it up. I hadn't really intended spending that much on it, and it was an unexpected expense in what looks to be a month of rather large expenses. It looked good when I picked it up - glowing from a good polish. The luthier went through everything he'd done - new tailpiece, new pegs, sanded fingerboard, new chinpiece, and so on and so forth. A regenerated and recalibrated instrument, in other words. I took it out as soon as I got home, and as soon as I drew the bow across the strings, I knew it had been worth it. The sound is rich and deep, like I would imagine thick dark honey would sound if it was given a voice. It sounds different, and better, than it ever has before. Incredible. I definitely recommend the luthier. Of course, while the instrument itself sounds wonderful, my playing is terrible. I'm completely out of shape, for a start. My arm aches about a mere 15 minutes play, and the strings cut into my soft fingertips. But I am determined to improve, and to make the most of the beautiful new life my violin has.
