2005-09-10 - 8:59 p.m.

I spent the afternoon with Cate, which was lovely - I haven't spent time alone on the weekend with her since we both started work at the beginning of the year. It's a long space without some bonding time.

We were looking through a book she's been reading - Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office. I took its advice with a grain of salt - it's certainly not applicable everywhere and for everyone. But it did have some useful pointers. Cate and I took its quiz (because who can resist a quiz?), and picked out some points out of our weak areas for each other to work on during the week. (After re-reading - yes, we are dorks. But we're nice dorks.)

So, this week I'll be grooming in private, rather than applying lipstick and brushing my hair at my desk (apparently this appears frivolous.) I'll be improving my accessorising (no overly distracting dangly earrings), and trying to take myself out of my comfort zones (asking for more challenging files that will stretch my abilities). Cate thinks I should invest in a good haircut, and she's right. Unless my hair is having a wavy day (and therefore rather untidy and unprofessional), the uneveness of my own scissor-work is apparent.

So, Monday morning, I plan to dazzle with my confidence and togetherness, both physical and mental. Actually, not Monday - I'm doing a first aid course, and will be wearing jeans (I'm not doing CPR in my nice work pants). But on Tuesday, I shall arrive at work a force to be reckoned with.

(Our team are moving floors in about 4 weeks, and I'm getting an office! It's an office the size of a cupboard, but it has four walls and a door, so I'm happy. I look forward to being able to close the door occasionally, and having some moments of uninterrupted concentration.)

After discovering the joys of nice wine last week, I had two glasses of red at lunch on Friday, and discovered that my consious control over what comes out of my mouth disappears almost entirely partway through the second glass. I think, for the sake of my career, I may stick with one glass in the future.

However, despite feeling extremely tipsy and getting no work done that afternoon (although I did frown very seriously at my computer in an effort to think straight), I think drinking improves my popularity/acceptance amongst the lawyers at work. Everyone drinks - it's how they socialise and bond, and the fact that I didn't drink affected the way people treated me. That's not the reason I drank at lunch, of course - I've just discovered a taste for wine. But it's certainly a pleasant side effect.
