It was freezing on Friday, the coldest day we've had all year, and when I ventured out of the office at lunch I had goosepimples on my wrists from the wind. On the train coming home there was the most spectacular sunset, a ring of dark orange fire stretching halfway around the horizon.

It's cold again today, and I've been wearing my ridiculous Eskimo-like coat over a jumper, and shuffling around in ugg boots.

We drove up to Maroochydore this morning to visit my uncle and aunt, who are wintering there for a few weeks. I had said that I would bring them a chocolate cake - I'm baking my way through Nigella Lawson's chocolate cake recipes, and wanting to try her Chocolate Honey Cake - but, not really being in the mood to try something new, I fell back on Nigella's Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake. The recipe was a little altered from the original, as it was one of those days when you have discover you're out of several vital ingredients halfway through baking, and have to substitute things and hope for the best.

It was lovely seeing them both - West had never met them before, so I was glad he'd met another little corner of my rather enormous extended family. (Cousins by the dozen, that sort of thing.) Brother came along with us, which was great as I hadn't seen him for months. Purely due to laziness on both our parts, although I blame him more, as I work fulltime and he studies, and therefore presumably has more time to arrange to meet me. However, I am his elder and dorkier sister, and presumably partying and girlfriends are a bit more attractive most of the time.

We have a public holiday on Wednesday, for the Brisbane Show, so the week will be broken up into two little manageable chunks. I have just put a red-purple rinse through my hair, which is satisfyingly bright (although so is my forehead). And I was given five little bottles of Givenchy perfume as a present from the Boss's wife, so I smell delicious. It's the first time I've ever had a selection of perfume to wear, actually. For a year or more, I've been dabbing on Forever and Ever from a little bottle that Kate sent me. Now I have a selection I'm wearing perfume all the time - even to bed, in a moment of amusing decadence - and have discovered that I rather like it. Bring on the perfume, I say. I'm now going to comb some through my hair in an attempt to mask the horrible chemical smell of hair dye, an experiment which will probably will result in a horrible mixture of perfume and chemical hair dye smell, but what the hell. I'm going to try it anyway.
