2005-08-02 - 5:51 p.m. I spent the weekend with two small gray endearing kittens, and discovered, much to my own surprise, that I don't actually dislike cats. I dislike it when they kill things, and I dislike how people care for their pet cats. But I don't actually dislike cats. In fact, I quite like them. I'll just give you some space to get over your shock and horror at that news. West and I are actually thinking about getting a cat in the future. Would you like some more space? Here you go. (My mum is going to kill me.) In fairness to my old self, there was a tom cat there whom I was indifferent to (probably in response to his indifference to me, I imagine). So I haven't gone completely cat mad. But kittens who purr frantically and push their heads against your hands, and fall floppily asleep in your lap, are simply irresistible. Armidale was great - a beautiful wintery landscape of bare tree branches and dry silver and gold grass. In between patting kittens, I tromped around enjoying the chill air, and taking photos of waterfalls and gorges. West's relatives were lovely, and despite the long six hour drive, it was a very worthwhile weekend. I needed a few days off work, and while I won't be returning tomorrow completely alight with enthusiasm, I will be returning with renewed energy. Partly, I must admit, because the weekend is now only three days away. Yay! It's enormous fun being on holidays on a Tuesday - not only because it means I've had four days off work, but because DVDs are only $1 each to rent at the video store. I went a bit crazy in the recent release section, and got out 11 movies, including a few I wanted to see at the cinemas but didn't, for one reason or another - House of Flying Daggers, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways, and so on. The DVD burner has been going all afternoon, and I'm nearly done. (Not that I would be doing anything illegal like burning DVDs. No. Never.) (And I know, copyright is important and so on, and I did a whole subject on it at Uni, but I tend to regard burning a DVD for personal use as a very very minor crime. Distributing copies - now there's a serious breach of copyright. The law may not agree with me, but what the hell.) I did wonder, for a moment, when lining up at the counter with my armful of discs, whether stores have a policy of noting down people who get out great piles of overnight movies that they can't possibly watch in 24 hours. I do hope not.
